Chennai records 21% YoY rise with sale of 6,951 residential units in H1 2022: Knight Frank India

Knight Frank India in its latest report, India Real Estate: H1 2022 (January – June 2022) cited that the Chennai residential market registered a 21% Year on Year (YoY)growth in sales in H1 2022.The city recorded sales of 6,951 housing units in H1 2022 compared to 5,751 housing units sold in H1 2021.The new home launches also increased by 40% YoY from 5,424 housing units in H1 2021 to 7,570 housing units in H1 2022. The weighted average price of residential properties in Chennai rose by an estimated 5% YoY to INR 4,242 per sq ft.

“There has been over a fivefold increase in the number of cataract cases in the city, especially in the age group of 50-70 years, during the past one year. For every 100 outpatients who visit private hospitals, anywhere from 40-60 are diagnosed with cataract conditions, most of them being end-stage cataracts – this number used to be just 10 per 100 outpatients on average during the pre-Covid years,” said Dr Srinivasan G Rao, Senior Ophthalmologist & Regional Head – Clinical Services, Dr Agarwal Eye Hospital.

Chennai: According to Knight Frank’s The Wealth Report 2022, Chennai was home to 160 ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWIs, with net worth of US$ 30m and above) in the year 2021. In the last 5 years, Chennai’s ultra-rich population grew by 64.2% from 97 in 2016 to 264 in 2021 making it the 4th fastest growing city in terms of UHNWIs during 2016-21. The ultra-wealthy population in the city is expected to increase by 65.6% to 264 by the year 2026.
